On Thursday, 3rd October 2024, the National College of Defence Studies (NCDS) hosted a thought-provoking seminar on the theme "Life After Service to the Nation", held at the College's auditorium.
The seminar was designed to guide senior officers on how to live a fulfilling and purposeful life after retirement.
It also focused on strategic decision-making processes and fostering cooperation between various security agencies in addressing both local and international security concerns.
The panellists emphasized the importance of early preparation for life after retirement, highlighting the need for a good home and substantial investments. They stressed that retirement is a part of life and having a financial safety net, such as a Provident Fund contributed over the years, can provide crucial support for senior officers during their retirement years.
Health and well-being were also key topics of discussion. Officers were encouraged to prioritize their health by undergoing regular medical checkups at least twice a year and maintaining an active lifestyle through consistent exercise. The panellists warned about the dangers of boredom and loneliness, which can significantly impact pensioners’ well-being. They advised building and maintaining strong relationships with spouses and loved ones as a way to enjoy a fulfilling post-service life.
The panellists were Maj Gen C Coleman (Rtd), Brig Gen D Frimpong (Rtd), A/Cdre J Adu-Gyamfi, Brig Gen J Vander-Pallen, Dr K Amponsah-Kwatiah (Retired Banker), Dr Alhassan Osman (Retired Lecturer), Capt (GN) A Tarm-Sackey(Rtd) and Col JK Buame.
